Professor Dame Glynis M Breakwell DBE DL FAcSS
Dame Glynis is one of Europe’s leading social psychologists. She took her PhD from the University of Bristol and MA & DSc from the University of Oxford. She is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences and an Honorary Fellow of the British Psychology Society.
Dame Glynis was appointed Vice-Chancellor at the University of Bath in 2001. She is director of Universities UK, the Student Loans Company, the Universities Superannuation Scheme, NHS-Improvement and a member of the Economic & Social Research Council. In 2010 she became a Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset and in 2012 a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
She has published more than 20 books and her research has focussed on leadership, identity processes and risk management.
Membership is by invitation to men and women who are prominent in the business and commercial life of the greater Bristol area, and who are prepared to give their time and skills in support of the Merchant Venturers’ objectives.
All the members meet together four times a year at what is known as Quarterly Hall, and again on Charter Day in November.
The Merchant Venturers are governed by the Master and two Wardens. They head a 15-strong Standing Committee of members who are elected annually on Charter Day, 10th November.
Day-to-day administration is carried out by the Treasurer, who is effectively the chief executive. She is advised as necessary by the Clerk, who is a lawyer.
