The Society of Merchant Venturers is seeking to appoint a Financial Controller
Flexible / Part time working c3-4 days a week.
Established under Royal Charter in 1552, The Society of Merchant Venturers (SMV) focuses on four key areas: education, care for older people, charitable giving and social enterprise.
- Education – currently educating over 3,900 young people across the city in nine schools at both primary and secondary level.
- Care for older people – supporting the care of over 5,000 older people, either directly through SMV’s own care homes, or indirectly through SMV’s work with the St Monica Trust.
- Charitable giving – making small grants to local organisations with a focus on helping the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.
- Social enterprise – working collaboratively with local universities, local authorities and other organisations, SMV helped to create Bristol & Bath Regional Capital which seeks to raise investment for local social projects.
SMV’s objectives are to contribute to the prosperity and well-being of the Greater Bristol area and to help enhance the quality of life for all. In addition to its role in many of Bristol’s charities, SMV, with Bristol City Council, is responsible for the stewardship of the Clifton and Durdham Downs.
SMV is now seeking to fill the important position of Financial Controller, to be based at Merchants’ Hall, one of Bristol’s most prestigious venues, situated on The Promenade in Clifton.
This is a leadership role for an enthusiastic and talented individual, requiring a qualified accountant or equivalent who is commercially astute and can bring hands-on expertise in finance and management.
You will operate at a senior level at the heart of the organisation supporting the Treasurer (de facto CEO) and deputising where necessary. The role is diverse and broad ranging and covers SMV’s investments, property, education and charity interests.
As Financial Controller, you will also be responsible for all aspects of financial reporting, overseeing the preparation and production of all the finances for SMV and the 15 other associated Charities under management. You will work closely with the Chairs and members of the Audit, Investment Strategy, Finance & Investment and Estates Committees, and you will possess the ability to build strong working relationships with key stakeholders such as third party advisors, property agents, Financial Investment advisers, and Finance Directors of Schools.
We are seeking candidates who are qualified accountants (or equivalent). You could either be joining from sectors such as property, charity, housing or social care, or currently be working within an accounting firm in an audit or advisory role and seeking a move into a highly commercial role in industry.
In return, SMV offers a part-time role with flexibility on days worked, although there are key meetings held on eight Fridays throughout the year which you would be required to attend.
If you feel that you have the requisite background and skills to join the SMV staff team in the position of Financial Controller, please email your CV with a covering letter to email@example.com.
